How do I shop on keto and still save money?

Many people who doubt keto or give up on it usually say that one reason is because keto shopping is “expensive.” It’s really not.

If I told you how much my income was, you’d probably be shocked by the fact that I can sustain a lifestyle that allows me to eat so well.

Last time I was at the store, it was close to Valentine’s Day, and I bought an 17-ounce T-bone steak for $5.99 and a pound and a quarter of asparagus for $3.00.  Additionally, foods inspired by Chinese New Year were on sale; a variety of seafood was marked way down as Catholics begin Lent; and canned food was reduced for Canned Food Month (it’s a thing)! So I was also able to snag some crab meat and a few large cans of whole peeled tomatoes for less, too (I love those tomatoes for making salsa, and ragu sauce).

Remembering things like this can make it easier to not only shop to save money, but help alleviate the pressure to plan meals with lots of variety while avoiding the decision-making anxiety that comes with it. I don’t know about you, but when I decide I want to try a certain recipe, it’s frustrating to not have everything on hand to make it, then have to spend more money and time than I need just to have it work out. It’s MUCH easier for me to let sales by season help with deciding what to get. Variety abounds, AND I don’t spend a lot more, when I do it this way.

Example: So far throughout February, the weekly flyers for stores have been showing the following on sale: Steak, strawberries, chocolate (Valentine’s Day); seafood in both frozen and canned form (Lent), and various Chinese vegetables and foods on sale for (Lunar/Chinese New Year).

Now, I’m not sure if the reason people like to cook up a steak and asparagus dinner for their loved ones on Valentine’s Day is because steak and asparagus are usually on sale or in season, or if it’s because that’s a popular meal people tend to serve for that occasion, so stores reduce their prices. I think it can sometimes be both. I know asparagus is best during the early spring of its growing region (still bitter winter where I live, but where it’s grown, the most slender and sweet spears being in March through June, where the rest of the year, they tend to be thicker (and slightly more bitter). Of course, the decision is yours to get fatter asparagus or thinner, but I prefer to have more pieces of it AND pay less.  I also wonder whether seafood is more plentiful now due to more commercial fishing being done at this time of year, or if it’s just because of the observance of Lent, a time during which people tend to give up eating meat and instead, eat more fish.

Anyway, I have been noticing and wondering about these things for awhile now and even though I’ve been shopping by season for years, I have only changed my lifestyle and been doing keto shopping for the last two of those. So I did the research to find even more things that typically go on sale each month and have put together this Keto Grocery Shopping by Season Guide list to share with you. I was planning to release this in January, which is when I put most of it together, but I got behind, sorry (one of my favorite months for keto grocery sales, what with all of the discounted football game celebration foods we can stock up on, like veggie/meat trays, frozen meatballs & chicken, avocados, etc. – July is my first fave, because of the wider availability of fresh cheap produce like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers)!

Is this guide an end-all, be-all shopping guide for keto?

Absolutely not, because it’s missing a few items you may need for keto diet success, that perhaps only go on sale at mystery times that we can’t plan on (or not at all), or in some cases—like with low carb baking alternatives or specialty ingredients—best purchased online through sites like Amazon. But it’s definitely a companion to keep handy alongside sales ads, while drafting a shopping list for your next trip to the grocery store!
